Analysis of the advantages of the optical communication systems versus the electrical transmission of data, and of the parameters that affect the speed of data transmission. Study of the modes of propagation, light sources, light detection circuits, and types of optical fiber. Analysis of the modulation of light for data transmission in analog and digital form. Design of optical communication systems using the computer.
