Sign Language Interpretation (Post Bachelor Professional Certificate)

The Professional Certificate in Sign Language Interpretation is designed for professionals who have a bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctorate or equivalent professional degrees, who wish to know and develop skills in the interpretation of sign language for the deaf. The Program facilitates the acquisition of knowledge, the development of skills and attitudes necessary for the interpretation of sign language in different work scenarios. The student is trained in language comprehension and expression skills, both gestural and in sign-to-speech interpretation. The Program includes training in common vocabulary, technical vocabulary in educational, health and legal areas.

The San Germán Campus is authorized to offer this Certificate.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  1. the deaf culture and its peculiarities.
  2. the rules, procedures and ethical aspects in the interpretation of Sign Language.
  3. the legal considerations that apply in the interpretation of Sign Language.
  4. the fundamental concepts of interpretation in Sign Language.
  5. the decision-making process to use the appropriate strategy for interpretation.
  6. models of interpretation in educational, legal and health situations.

Skills

  1. Execute interpretation in a competent and safe manner, in accordance with the practice standards of the profession.
  2. Participate in educational, legal and health centers to apply effective sign interpretation to achieve the service of deaf people.
  3. Apply interpretation skills to promote changes for the benefit of deaf people.
  4. Competently execute the gestural - motor and oral interpretation, according to the educational, legal and health scenarios.

Academic Progress Requirements

  1. Comply with all the academic progress rules established in the Graduate Catalog.
  2. Pass all courses with a minimum grade of B.

Graduation Requirements

In addition to complying with all graduation requirements established in the Graduate Catalog, the professional certificate in Sign Language Interpretation requires compliance with the following:

  1. Be a student with regular admission.
  2. Obtain an academic index of 3.00 or more in the courses required for your degree.

Retention Requirements

The retention requirements for the Program are:

  1. Comply with all the academic progress standards established in this catalog.
  2. Pass all courses with a minimum grade of B.
