Program description

The Post-Bachelor Professional Certificate in online mode, has been outlined to develop a Psychogeriatrics professional who can provide quality multidisciplinary and holistic health services to the elderly and their families from a biopsychosocial-spiritual framework.

Emphasis is given to the health process, mental health, psychoeducation and holistic in areas of extreme need for intervention and prevention such as research and multidisciplinary interventions, physiology of the elderly, knowledge of therapeutic intervention for the elderly, perspectives in Psychogeriatrics, ethical aspects and legal in psychogeriatrics and knowledge of therapeutic interventions for families with elderly members.

This professional certificate is aimed at professionals in the areas of health, mental health, psychoeducation, such as: Psychologists, professionals in charge of geriatric care centers and professionals who offer psychoeducational services to the geriatric population and people who provide spiritual support or functions support and spiritual care. The psychogeriatric service can be offered in hospital institutions, government, educational, public and private agencies, in geriatric care centers and any other institution that, among its functions, includes care for the elderly population and their families.

Program goals

Psychogeriatrics - Post-Bachelor Professional Certificate in distance modality has the following goals:

  1. Provide a preparation of excellence with local and global scope and relevance, in the knowledge and its application of the stage of old age, physiological, emotional, psychological, social, family and spiritual characteristics, variables that affect the elderly person, psychoeducation, current situation of the long-lived and intervention process with elderly people and their families.

  2. Provide the fundamentals, skills and techniques of Psychogeriatrics to develop a professional who contributes in an integral and competent manner with the physiological, mental, social, emotional, psychological, spiritual and holistic health of the elderly person and their families in an environment local and global.

The Post-Bachelor Professional Certificate in Psychogeriatrics is designed for the development of skills that allow the student to:

Knowledge

  1. Psychoeducational or therapeutic interventions for elderly people.

  2. Physiological, emotional characteristics. psychological, social, family and spiritual.

  3. Ethical and legal aspects in the practice of Psychogeriatrics.

Abilities

  1. Apply knowledge about the life stage of old age, variables that affect the long-lived, and the process of competently intervening with the elderly and their families with a local and global perspective.

  2. Demonstrate mastery in the use of technological resources in the execution of their professional work.

Attitudes

  1. Demonstrate commitment as a professional of Psychogeriatrics, for the quality of life of the elderly person and their families and with their responsibility to stay updated as part of their personal and professional competence.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to the Program, the student must:

  1. Comply with the admission standards established in the current Graduate Catalog of the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico.

  2. Possess academic preparation from an accredited university, in the areas of health education, health, mental health, Thanatology, Nursing, Medicine, Professional Counseling, Psychology, spiritual and holistic care.

  3. Have a minimum academic index of 3:00 in the last 60 credits of academic work at the undergraduate or graduate level, or a combination of both.

Retention requirements

  1. Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00

Graduation requirements

  1.  Comply with the requirements of the Graduate Catalog.

  2. Pass all courses with a minimum grade of B.
