Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Gerontology (MA)

Program description

The program seeks to train human services professionals with the necessary skills to work from a biopsychosocial and spiritual perspective in matters related to the provision of services to older adults.

This academic offering - Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Gerontology and Professional Certificate in Interdisciplinary Gerontology (post-baccalaureate) has been delineated so that people with diverse professional and academic backgrounds who wish to undertake specialized professional practice with older adults, may despair of policy development. social, service administration, physical, emotional, psychosocial and spiritual health interventions, and that it responds to a comprehensive perspective.

To obtain the degree of Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Gerontology, students will take the 30 credits of the program. Students who wish to do so may opt for a Professional Certificate in Interdisciplinary Gerontology, if they complete the first two quarters and the special topics course, ending with 18 credits.

The goals of this program are focused on training professionals from diverse academic backgrounds to:

  1. Exercise the practice of gerontology from a comprehensive perspective.

  2. Promote the use of evidence-based practices in professional interventions.

Program objectives

The specific objectives of this program are:

  1. Exercise the practice of gerontology from an interdisciplinary perspective to strengthen the biological, psychological, social and spiritual functioning of older adults in their ecosystem environment.

  2. Contribute to various disciplines by applying evidence-based practices of gerontology.

The Program is designed to develop the professional skills that allow the student to:

Knowledge

  1. Assess the state of well-being of the elderly according to their stage of development and condition.

  2. Analyze the interventions used by service providers, thus promoting the use of evidence-based practices that lead to an effective professional intervention.

Abilities

  1. Implement coordinated courses of action in order to promote the full enjoyment of their abilities in the elderly.

  2. Adopt evidence-based practices that, in addition to efficiency and effectiveness, generate empirical data on interventions carried out.

Attitudes

  1. Promote the development and provision of services free of discrimination, oppression, stigma and generalization, which limit the full use of the faculties of the elderly.

  2. Assess the knowledge of the results derived from the professional practice carried out.

Admission requirements

Students applying for admission to the master's degree in Interdisciplinary Gerontology, or the Certificate (Post-Baccalaureate) must meet the admission requirements of the current programs at the Institution and the following requirement:

  1. Possess a bachelor's degree in any discipline, from an accredited college or university.

  2. Have passed a human development course or its equivalent at the high school level with a minimum of C.
